Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love travelling and I am 100% travelling on my own if no one wants to/can’t come too. But social media is always full of the good stuff and there are things that don’t get mentioned – like these 5 aspects of travelling alone that you need to be prepared for (and even after travelling on my own for over a decade, have still thrown me during this trip):

1. Having to take all your stuff with you if you’re going to the ladies – station and airport cubicles are rarely big enough
2. Making the decision between paying the single supplement or sharing a room with someone you’ve never met – don’t underestimate the impact of sharing with someone if they’re very different to you
3. Eating alone in places where it’s just not ‘normal’ – in England I’ve no problem eating out on my own but it’s so much harder when abroad and they look at you with sympathy (I still do it though – even if the waiter in the restaurant seemed to be pitying the poor English girl on her own for lunch in Santiago yesterday)
4. Having no one to share the responsibility of tickets/money/passports/budget/etc – it can just get a bit wearing sometimes
5. Missing out on photos – must take photo trends in far away locations (think picking up the Louvre with your fingers) tend to need either another person to take the photo of you or make sure no one steps on/moves your camera after you’ve set it up and both ways take longer and never quite end up how you imagined
But I can 100% say that the overall experience makes these little things so unbelievably worth it.
